These terms apply to the Sagase app, made by Hampus Hammarlund ("I", "me"). By downloading or using Sagase, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.

Using Sagase

Sagase is free to use, with no account, subscription, or in-app purchases. You're welcome to use it to study and look up Japanese. Please don't misuse the app or the services it relies on, for example by trying to disrupt the dictionary downloads or by extracting the app's data at scale.

Dictionary content and attribution

Sagase is built on openly licensed and freely available data. These sources keep their own licenses, which also apply to their content in the app:

• Vocabulary and kanji dictionaries (JMdict, KANJIDIC2): Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0
• Example sentences: Tatoeba, licensed under CC BY 2.0 FR
• Kanji stroke order and components: KanjiVG, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0
• Pitch accent: Kanjium, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0
• Kaishi 1.5k vocabulary list: Kaishi contributors
• Japanese text analysis: MeCab

Accuracy

Dictionary entries, example sentences, and other content come from the sources above and may contain errors or be out of date. Sagase is a study aid and not a substitute for professional translation or advice, so please don't rely on it where mistakes could cause harm.

Your data

Your lists, flashcards, and progress are stored on your device. I can't recover them if they are lost, so use the export feature to keep a backup. How the app handles information is described in the privacy policy.

Source code

Sagase's source code is available on GitHub. Use of the code is covered by the license in that repository, not by these terms.

App stores

If you got Sagase from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, that store's own terms also apply to your download and use. Apple and Google are not responsible for Sagase or its content.

No warranty

Sagase is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind. I work to keep it accurate and running smoothly, but I can't promise that it will always be available, error free, or suitable for a particular purpose.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent allowed by law, I am not liable for any damages or losses that come from using, or being unable to use, Sagase. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have that can't be limited by law.

Changes

Sagase and these terms may change over time. The current version will always be on this page, with the date it was last updated. If you keep using the app after a change, you accept the updated terms.
